What's Your Question?

I pretty much know I can count on Dr. Seuss for anything...even teaching punctuation! Almost all of my firsties are using periods in their writing...not always correctly, but that's always a work in progress. So this week I decided to spice things up a bit and tackle the question mark.

I started off by using What the Teacher Wants punctuation posters that are absolutely adorable. The kids LOVE how cute they look!

Once we recognized what one looked like (which most already knew) we read this little beauty. The kiddos were detectives looking for question marks and more importantly question words.

While there were only 2 question words in our book, it's always good to start out slow, we added them to our question words anchor chart.

Throughout the week as students read in their books, if they found a new question word, we would add it to our chart. In a few weeks, it will be chalked full of question words.

We practiced writing questions by choosing a word from the question chart, underlining it, and adding ending punctuation correctly. They had to find 2 friends to read their question and they had to write an answer.

We keep a running list of question words on this *freebie* below. Click on the picture if you would like to grab it!

  1. I really like the idea of keeping a running list of question words, because there are so many more than the 5 Ws (who, what, where, when , why) Thanks for sharing.

  2. I LOOOOVVVEEEE the Question Words chart!! We verbally made a list this past week so I love the idea of keeping a record on an anchor chart. Thanks for the idea and the freebie! We will be using it this week. :)
